Block being set to frame the hearth slab; Inspector Hansel is always on the job; nothing slips by his keen eye.

2x6s form the framing to close the gaps at the corners of in the concrete blocks (see above photos); they are held in place with a ratchet strap. The 2x4s in the well are supporting the Durock® subfloor, ready for the concrete pour. In the image below you can see where the ash dump was framed with scrap wood to keep the space from oven hearth into the ash dump open when the concrete slab was poured. Durock® subfloor is visible.

Hand-pouring the concrete for the hearth slab; it was leveled using a garden hoe and settled into place with a piece of rebar

Hearth slab poured and rebar being placed to support the exterior sidewalls; insulation will go between this exterior wall and oven walls.
